Team Fostering: Could You Foster? - Types of Fostering: Fostering Teenagers

Fostering Teenagers

Fostering teenagers is a huge part of fostering at Team Fostering. There can be a preconception that children in foster care are babies, toddlers or primary age children; however, there are an increasing number of teenagers taken in to foster care.

Teenagers become part of the care system for the same reasons as younger children; family illness, breakdown or safeguarding concerns including abuse and neglect.

Teenagers in care have often experienced a high number of difficulties in their life, and this can manifest in challenging behaviours and a lack of trust in their caregiver. But for foster carers who persevere with a young person in need of their support, it can be some of the most rewarding work they do, building a teenager’s self-esteem and confidence while giving them the stability they need to further their education and develop healthy friendships and relationships.

Fostering Teenagers:

  • Isn’t something you have to do on your own. There’s a high level of support available including educational and psychological support for teenagers dealing with complex issues.
  • Gives you the opportunity to make a lasting impact on a young person. Many young people in foster care have gone on to successful careers and academic qualifications.
