So, who can become a Foster Carer?

We have Foster Carers working for us who come from all walks of life and backgrounds, and have had various different experiences before they came to us, so we don’t have an image of the ‘perfect Foster Carer’. No two Foster families are the same and we do not discriminate against anyone because of their age, race, gender or sexual orientation.

If you are thinking about Fostering and feel that you could give a child or young person a caring, safe, secure and stable home environment and you meet the criteria listed below, please contact us.

We are looking for people who :-

  • Live within the specified areas (click here to view map).
  • Are over 25 years of age, there is no upper age limit, but you must be able to keep up with the children!
  • You can be married, single or living together, but if you are a couple you have to have been living together for over 2 years, and have a stable relationship.
  • Preferably be able to drive and have access to a car as you may be expected to take a child to and from school and for appointments.
  • One person is available on a full time, 24/7 basis to care for a child.
  • You enjoy looking after children and young people, and are able to meet their needs and adapt to different situations.
  • You are able to provide a child/young person with a nurturing and positive family environment where he/she is valued, and is encouraged to achieve their full potential.
  • Understand that fostering can be very challenging and are prepared to work hard, but are committed to making a difference to the child’s life.
  • Can offer each child his/her own bedroom.
  • Have the relevant skills and experience e.g. foster care or adoption, youth or community work, residential work, teaching, voluntary work with young people, child-minding for children in need, working with people with learning disabilities.
  • Value and respect other people’s differences.
  • Are patient, resourceful, flexible and able to use their initiative.
  • Can work as part of a team.
  • Have loads of energy and enthusiasm, because it’s a hard job but it can also be very rewarding!
