Eligibility Criteria

Our foster carers come from all walks of life and backgrounds and have had different experiences so we don’t have an image of the ‘perfect foster carer’.

We welcome enquiries from people of all walks of life and do not discriminate against anyone because of their age, race, gender or sexual orientation. Foster carers do need to fulfil some criteria, and further details are provided below, however each potential foster carer's circumstances are considered on an individual basis. You can discuss this in more detail with us by getting in touch or making an enquiry.

Foster carers with Team Fostering:

  • Have a spare bedroom.
  • Are available to care for a child or young person 24/7. This only applies to the main carer as your partner may work full time. We will consider some part time working arrangements for the main carer. Please get in touch to discuss your situation further.
  • Live within the areas covered by Team Fostering in the North East, Yorkshire and the East Midlands.** Check your postcode.
  • Are not already caring for young children (under 8) in the home.
  • Are single, married, in a civil partnership or living together. If you are a couple then you will have been living together for over 2 years and have a stable relationship.
  • Are over 21 years of age. There is no upper age limit but you must be able to keep up with the children.
  • Can drive and have access to a car.

In addition to the above you should also:

  • Understand that foster caring can be very challenging and be prepared to work hard. Be committed to making a difference to a child’s life.
  • Be able to provide a child/young person with a nurturing and positive family environment where he/she is valued, and is encouraged to achieve their full potential.
  • Enjoy looking after children and young people, and are able to meet their needs and adapt to different situations.
  • Value and respect other people’s differences.
  • Be patient, resourceful, flexible and able to use your initiative.
  • Be able to work as part of a team.
** The eligibility criteria is pre-determined by the needs of the local authorities placing children with Team Fostering carers. It is therefore possible that the criteria may be different in your area. This will be discussed with you in more detail during our initial conversations with you.
